Tik Tok: Time for climate action

On December 7-18, representatives of 192 nations will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark for the United Nations Conference of the Parties. The meeting is expected to draft and ratify a new treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which is due to expire in 2012. The outcome of these talks will determine the future of our planet.

To raise awareness of the importance of this historic meeting—and spell out the kind of treaty the group needs to create—the Tck Tck Tck (Tik Tok in Asia) campaign is uniting the voices of millions across the globe. Our ultimate goal: an fair, ambitious and binding international agreement that reflects the latest science on climate change.

The Tik Tok campaign in the Philippines is being supported by Oxfam GB in the Philippines and Dakila - Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism.

Writer-band frontman Lourd de Veyra warned that "Copenhagen is more than just an issue of ecology, it's also an issue of justice. Developed countries need to take responsibility in the increasing damage brought about by climate change. This is an issue of debt. It is unfair that rich countries benefit from industrialization while poorer countries struggle with strange, destructive changes in weather systems."

Singer-songwriter Noel Cabangon said, "Climate change is happening around the world and no one is spared from its cruel impact. Rich or poor, women and children, young and old. Act now while we still have enough tome to avert another catastrophy. Reverse the impact of climate change. Act now."

A Flower Brimming With Tears of Joy

This piece was inspired by a male tribal jewelry piece of the Ifugao, reinterpreted and transformed into feminine- from slabs and sharp corners into layers of round, smooth-edged petals of mother of pearl. All metal components are 18k yellow and white gold, and the fabric is hand-washed T'nalak from the T'boli tribe of the South.

This piece won in the Non-Traditional Category of the Guild of Philippine Jewellers' design competition (May 2008).

This work, Oceanides, was exhibited at the Finnish residence on the evening of the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Philippines and Finland. The painting is inspired by the Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius who is also one of the most notable classical composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His music which reflects the Finnish psyche, played an important role in the formation of the Finnish national identity. This piece is named after a very intense and melancholic composition by Sibelius which he composed on a TransAtlantic ship bound for New York. I chose to take the extreme opposite path - instead of the intense mood falling down like tears, i took a 360 degree turn and visualized a triumphant flood of flowers.

His eyes reveal a kind and wise heart, and his stature does not cause him any distraction from what he knows is true and real: spiritual knowledge. This painting was exhibited at The Night of India event held at the Indian Ambassador's residence in Manila Philippines, in 2006.

I made this piece on the day of submission of entries for the Guild of Philippine Jewellers' Annual Competition 2007, thinking that i should knock my two entries out of balance by creating a third. I have spent hours- no, days- on my first two entries. This winning one was done in four hours, from creative process to execution (painting). Making this entry taught me that when inspiration strikes, time does not matter.
